Bank statement PDF to Excel, checked to the cent

Turn a text-based bank statement PDF into a spreadsheet you can open in Excel, and know no row was dropped: StatementHaul checks opening balance + credits − debits = closing balance on every statement.

Why not just copy and paste?

Pasting a PDF into Excel or running a generic PDF-to-Excel converter usually gives merged cells, wrapped descriptions split across rows and amounts stored as text. Worse, nothing tells you if a transaction went missing. StatementHaul pulls out one row per transaction and runs a balance check, per statement, per page and per row when a running balance is printed. If it doesn't add up, the row that breaks it is highlighted.

Steps

  1. Download the PDF statement from online banking. You should be able to select its text. If you can't, it's a scan and isn't supported.
  2. Drop it into StatementHaul. It's read in your browser and never uploaded.
  3. Confirm it shows Reconciled, or review the highlighted row.
  4. Download the CSV.
  5. In Excel, open it with Data › From Text/CSV [Microsoft], pick UTF-8 as the file origin, and load. Then File › Save As › Excel Workbook (.xlsx) if you want a workbook.

What you get in Excel

One row per transaction with the columns Date (YYYY-MM-DD), Description, Amount (negative for money out), Debit, Credit, Balance and Page. If the PDF holds several accounts, an Account column is added. Amounts are plain numbers, so SUM and pivot tables work straight away. If you also use QuickBooks, the same statement can be downloaded as a QBO file (guide).

FAQ

Do I get an .xlsx file?

No. StatementHaul exports CSV (and QBO for QuickBooks). Excel opens the CSV directly. To keep it as a workbook, use File › Save As › Excel Workbook (.xlsx).

Is it free?

5 statements a month per device are free with no signup, and statements that don't parse or don't balance aren't counted. After that it's $9 one-time for 10 statements or $29 one-time for 100, any length.

Do scanned bank statements work?

No. Only text-based PDFs, the kind you download from online banking. If you can't select the text in the PDF, it's a scan and won't convert.

Is my statement uploaded?

No. The PDF is read in your browser with pdf.js and never uploaded to our server.

Which columns end up in Excel?

Date (YYYY-MM-DD), Description, Amount (signed), Debit, Credit, Balance and Page, plus Account when the PDF holds several accounts.

Does it work with Indian bank statements for Tally?

It reads Indian lakh amounts such as 1,23,456.78 and B/F and C/F balance lines, tested on synthetic statements only. It doesn't produce a Tally import file.
